How to correctly set the thread feed calibration

The thread feed settings should only be modified once you have checked the following steps and you still get sew quality issues or real/false thread break messages:-

  • Bobbin tension - for calibration it should be set to 170. After calibration it should be set back to 250-300
  • Presser foot set to the lowest setting
  • Acti-feed - auto with a minimum setting of 4pts
  • Hook adjustments, perform the hook timing adjustments

Thread feed calibration process

  • Load the Calibration Adjust_01.ofm design available at the bottom of this article.  (also located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Melco\Melco OS v11\Test Designs)
  • Load 1 layer of backing + 1 layer of embroidery felt to an 18 or similar hoop

  •  Set Needle 8 or 9 for the test using a dark thread
  • Go into Tools – Settings and check that Feed Adjust is set to 0.  This is the default starting point.  (Note: For older versions of Bravo OS and Melco OS - version 11.09.099 and earlier, the Feed Adjust default is 20.)

If the Feed Adjust setting is not available it will need to be turned on in the registry please follow the details at the bottom of the this article.

  • Set Acti-Feed Minimum to 4pts.
  • Run the design and look at Acti-Feed current value.  The feed should be running at around 12pts, its normal that it oscillates a bit.

  • At the end of the design sew-out, remove the hoop and look at the back of the embroidery, the bobbin column should be around 1mm of the total column, some people prefer more or less bobbin percentage and that’s fine, just adjust the calibration to the preferred bobbin column preference. If the bobbin column is too wide increase Feed Adjust by one point and repeat.  If the bobbin column is too thin then decrease Feed Adjust by one point.

  • Once you are happy with the results, then load the Amaya Test Design to make sure the machine is running correctly. Download here.
